Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education is a vital national effort driven by the increasing awareness of a significant shortfall in American STEM expertise. This gap has serious impacts on both our economy and national defense. OteroSTEM, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit made up of dedicated scientists, engineers, and teachers, is passionate about STEM outreach. They are working hard to develop programs to address these shortages in Otero County and the surrounding areas. OteroSTEM sponsors a variety of engaging programs for students and continues to be a leader in coordinating STEM education, recruiting volunteers, and funding important STEM initiatives.

OteroSTEM organizes demonstrations and hands-on learning activities into community events to raise awareness among Otero County students about local STEM opportunities. Volunteers work with Holloman AFB, the Space Museum, educators, and homeschool groups to enable STEM professionals to serve as guest speakers and demonstrators.

Sponsorships include a range of exciting project-based initiatives, especially those at the STEM Learning Center. Popular programs like FIRST® [https://www.firstinspires.org/] offer valuable, practical training, giving volunteers a great opportunity to help students build technical skills and become comfortable with key ideas in robot design, programming, and today’s technological challenges. Activities aimed at problem-solving, fostering critical thinking, and innovation.
